The world’s most famous personality from South Tyrol is also the oldest: the Iceman known as Ötzi. In 1991 a couple of German hikers found a body at the foot of the Similaun glacier. At first it was thought that it might be a mountaineer who had an accident, and whom the glacier had returned to light after preserving the body for a certain period of time. Indeed he was a mountaineer, but he met his death in the mountains of South Tyrol about 5000 years previously. The event was made even more exceptional because some of the items used by the Iceman were found with him.
